Bipartisan Solution on Climate Change Needed

August 18, 2018

Record heat waves are hitting around the world. Record fires are burning uncontrollably out West and in the Arctic. In the Northeast, extreme precipitation events are increasing in frequency and severity. Science associates these and predicts far worse in just a decade or two from our current course of greenhouse gas emissions.

Sometimes a light touch of government at the tiller is necessary for a course correction. This is one of those times. If enough of us go to cclusa.org/write and submit a quick note regarding our concerns about global warming we can create the political will for Congress to act on our behalf. A fair, efficient, federal solution to reduce emissions will yield many co-benefits.

Sample text for your note: “I am extremely concerned about climate change from fossil fuel emissions. Please look into the fair, efficient, bipartisan solution that will protect household purchasing power, help the poor, grow the economy, and have global reach called Carbon Fee and Dividend from Citizens’ Climate Lobby.”

Members of Congress use anecdotes and stories in interactions with their peers and the press, but mostly they use numbers to determine their focus. Sending Congress a note takes just a few minutes, but when enough people request action, Congress will respond.

Ask your friends and family to do this too, and put a monthly reminder on your calendar. Together, we can each be a part of charting a new, sustainable course for human civilization and life on Earth.
