Billy Davis Jr. Marks Anniversary
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ As they celebrated their 30th year of marriage, Grammy-winning couple Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo were quietly agonizing.
Last June, the 61-year-old Davis learned he had prostate cancer.
``That was the hardest part, just hearing those dreaded words: You have cancer,″ Davis said Monday. ``Your immediate reaction is, ‘This is a death sentence.’ But it’s not, and I think it’s important that other men realize that.″
His prostate was removed in August, shortly after the couple celebrated their anniversary. Davis said the cancer had not spread beyond the prostate, and he opted for surgery over radiation.
When he awoke in the recovery room, Davis was concerned about one thing _ his wife.
``I was worried that no one had told her I was fine, and I asked for her. After 30 years, it was like asking for my right arm,″ he said.
The couple met as members of the multiple Grammy-winning group The Fifth Dimension in 1965. They left the band to record together, winning a Grammy in 1976 for ``You Don’t Have to be a Star (To Be in My Show).″
