One killed in multiple-vehicle crash on I-64
BARBOURSVILLE — One person was killed Wednesday in a multiple-vehicle crash that closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 for hours near the Merritt’s Creek exit, according to the Barboursville Police Department.
The eight-vehicle crash was reported to Cabell County 911 at 2:19 p.m. at mile marker 17.5, on the bridge just after the Merritt’s Creek exit.
According to officers with the Barboursville Police Department, one person was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington and later died. The victim’s name has not been released.
The police department said the victim’s truck had metal and trash in the bed that came through the back of the vehicle, causing serious injury to the victim.
Officers with the police department were still investigating the crash just before 7 p.m. Wednesday and the westbound lanes of the interstate were still closed. A BPD crash investigator said inclement weather was a factor in the crash, and investigators were attempting to determine which vehicles hit each other in what order. The investigator said it was possible that an initial minor crash led to the multi-vehicle pileup.
It wasn’t the only crash emergency officials responded to Wednesday afternoon. Another crash on I-64 westbound was reported at 1:45 p.m. at mile marker 11.5, according to dispatchers. That crash involved a semi-truck and another vehicle. The Huntington Police Department responded, and one person was transported to the hospital.
Westbound traffic was rerouted to W.Va. 2 and U.S. 60 during the closure of I-64.
