MIAMI (AP) _ Peter Bromby and crewman Martin Siese of Bermuda won the Bacardi Cup Star Class Regatta on Friday, their second victory in the last three years of the international competition.

Bromby and Siese finished second in Friday’s race. But they never were worse than ninth in any of the six races this year.

``Speed and consistency were the keys for us all week,″ said Bromby, recently chosen as Bermuda’s male athlete of the year. ``We just tried to get off to strong starts every day, and not take too many chances after that.″

World champions Iain Percy and crewman Steve Mitchell of Great Britain, who held an 11-point lead entering Friday’s final race, finished 26th and wound up second.

``Sometimes the routes open up and sometimes they don’t. They just didn’t today,″ said Percy, aiming to become the first European skipper to win in the regatta’s 76-year history. ``We’ll drag it away from the Americas sooner or later.″

John Kostecki and Austin Sperry of Miami won Friday and finished third.

Miamians Augie Diaz and crewman Mark Strube, were second entering the final day, finished 43rd and dropped to fifth overall.

Defending champions and Olympic gold medalists Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liljedahl wound up 16th in the race and seventh overall.
