Pope Francis has authorized an investigation of West Virginia bishop, who was first accused of sexual misconduct during his tenure as a priest in Philadelphia, church officials said Thursday.

The announcement came as the pontiff accepted the resignation of Bishop Michael Joseph Bransfield as leader of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, W.Va.
