St. John’s 88, Loyola Marymount 85
NEW YORK (AP) _ Shelton Jones scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead St. John’s to an 88-85 victory over Loyola Marymount in the finals of the Lapchick Memorial basketball tournament Sunday.
St. John’s, 2-0, has won all 13 Lapchick tournaments.
Greg Harvey added 18 points for the Redmen, while Matt Brust had 16.
Hank Gathers led Loyola with 24 points. Mike Yoest added 22 and Corey Gaines, a transfer from UCLA, had 20.
Trailing 85-78, Loyola scored six straight points to close to within one point with 38 seconds left. But Michael Porter of St. John’s then hit a free throw and a layup to make it 88-84 with six seconds remaining.
After Brust received a technical foul for delaying the inbounds play, Yoest made one of two free throws to make it 88-85. The Lions had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but Jeff Fryer’s 3-point attempt bounced off the rim.
