Women’s basketball: RCTC sends Hucke out on high note

February 28, 2019

The Rochester Community and Technical College women’s basketball team sent their coach out in style.

Long-time head coach Steve Hucke is stepping down following this season to focus on his job at the Rochester Area Family YMCA.

His career with the Yellowjackets is not over yet, though he coached his final game at home on Tuesday, with RCTC rolling to a 78-57 victory against MSCTC-Fergus Falls.

“It’s bittersweet,” Hucke said. “I’m excited about my position at the Y, and I hope that when people think of RCTC women’s basketball, that I’m part of that thought process.

“I had a lot of great coaches and athletes to work with. The women we’ve had over the year have been oustanding on the court and in the classroom, and more importantly as women.”

RCTC’s victory was a big one, as it sealed the Yellowjackets berth in the MCAC/Region XIII-A playoffs. The ’Jackets tied with Minnesota West for the third spot in the playoffs, and RCTC lost the coin flip for the third seed.

The ’Jackets will be the fourth seed in the region tournament, set for Saturday and Sunday at Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wis.

RCTC (9-13 overall) will face Western Technical College at 1 p.m. Saturday in a region tournament semifinal.

“We have to make sure to take care of the ball a little better,” said Hucke, whose team had 25 turnovers on Tuesday. “We outscored (MSCTC) 19-4 in the first quarter (Tuesday). If we can play like that, we have a good shot of getting to the championship.”

Grace Riley led RCTC with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Alyssa Whitson scored 16 points and added four rebounds.

Grace Riley recorded her first triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists; and Abby Bauer had 10 points and six rebounds.
