Officer cleared of wrongdoing in arrest that blinded woman
WINNFIELD, La. (AP) — A police officer in Winnfield, Louisiana, has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing in a 2018 arrest that left a black woman blind in one eye.
News outlets report Winn District Attorney Chris Nevils announced last week that Officer Justin Curry was justified in using force on Tanisha Amos White. Nevils says Curry responded to a report of an unwanted person and encountered White, who tried attacking him and a witness.
He says Curry pushed her away and she fell face first onto a concrete driveway that was slick with rain. He says she tried again and was pepper-sprayed, again falling onto the driveway. He says a physician who treated White confirmed her injuries were consistent with a fall on concrete.
Curry may return to the force pending city council approval.
