Man jumps from Huntington bridge
HUNTINGTON — Emergency officials were searching for a man who they say jumped off the Frank “Gunner” Gatski Memorial Bridge, also known as the East Huntington Bridge and the 31st Street Bridge, late Friday night.
The call came in to Cabell County 911 around 11 p.m., and the man was in the water when officials arrived at the scene.
Officials at the scene said the man went under the water and hadn’t resurfaced 30 minutes after he jumped. They said the river was “moving really fast.”
Cabell County EMS had a boat in the water to aid in the search. The Huntington Fire Department and Huntington Police Department were also on scene, and officials from Ohio were assisting at the scene as well.
The bridge, which connects Huntington to Proctorville, Ohio, was closed temporarily while emergency officials searched the river below for the man but has since reopened.
Officials called off the search a little after midnight Friday and said they would evaluate the weather in the morning to determine their plan of action on Saturday.
