INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ After five wins in six starts against lesser competition, Astra beat even-money favorite Happyanunoit by a half-length in Sunday's $240,950 Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Kent Desormeaux rallied the 4-year-old filly from fourth in the field of five to overtake Happyanunoit within the final sixteenth of a mile of the 1 1/8-mile race. She was timed in 1:45 4-5.

Tout Charmant finished third, four lengths behind Happyanunoit.

Astra, whose biggest previous victory came in April's Grade III Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland, was the Gamely's fourth choice at 7-2 odds.

Astra, who carried 117 pounds, paid $9.60 and $4.20. She won $157,170, nearly doubling the bay filly's earnings, which moved to $345,424.

Happyanunoit, the 121-pound high weight, paid $3.20 to place. There was no show wagering.
