January 19, 1999

CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a $1.1 million, one-year contract with right-hander Bill Simas, avoiding arbitration.

Simas, 27, made $250,000 last year, when he went 4-3 with 18 saves and a 3.57 ERA in 60 games with the White Sox.

``I am very pleased we were able to reach an agreement with Bill that satisfied both sides,″ White Sox general manager Ron Schueler said.

Simas limited opponents to a .206 batting average last season, the eighth-lowest in the American League. He is 10-13 with 21 saves and a 3.99 ERA during four seasons with the White Sox.
