2 SC schools to pilot new grading system

June 1, 2019

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Two South Carolina elementary schools are piloting a new grading system.

WCSC-TV reports Westview Primary and Westview Elementary, both in Berkeley County, plan to move away from the traditional grading system to a competency-based program starting next school year.

It will begin with the 2nd grade class at Westview Primary and 3rd grade class at Westview Elementary. Then, the program will be implemented for the 1st grade class at Westview Primary and 4th grade class at Westview Elementary for the 2020-2021 school year. Finally, kindergarteners at Westview Primary and 5th graders at Westview Elementary will be transitioned the following school year.

Westview Elementary Principal Shawn Wimmer says the new system only grades learning — not behavior.

School officials believe the change will motivate children and help them enjoy learning.
