DURHAM, N.H. (AP) _ Chris Hixson fired a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Apgar with 3:41 left in the fourth quarter to give Rhode Island a 10-7 victory over New Hampshire on Saturday.
Hixson, who threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns, set up the winning score with a 51-yard pass to Apgar.
Rhode Island (3-0, 2-0 Yankee Conference) stopped New Hampshire (0-2) on its final two drives by intercepting passes.
Rhode Island held New Hampshire scoreless for three quarters until Jerry Azumah sliced through the middle of the Rams’ defense for a 29-yard touchdown that put New Hampshire in the lead, 7-3 with 7:48 left in the fourth quarter. Azumah led New Hampshire with 23 carries for 123 yards.
Rhode Island got on the scoreboard first when Heath Walker capped a 55-yard drive with a 35-yard field goal. Linebacker Ryan Carstens, with 13 tackles and two sacks, led the Rhode Island defense that caused four fumbles.
New Hampshire failed on three first-half drives, which ended with a fumble, an interception and a muffed field goal attempt.
