Body Of Stillborn Girl Found In Dirty Laundry

April 9, 1988

ATLANTA (AP) _ Medical investigators were examining the body of a stillborn baby, which was mistakenly sent to a laundry in a bundle of blankets, authorities said.

The body will be returned for cremation in keeping with the parents’ wishes, said officials at West Paces Ferry Hospital in Atlanta.

The girl was stillborn late Wednesday night or early Thursday at the hospital, spokeswoman Karen Koch said.

Nurses followed hospital procedure of wrapping the body in blankets and taking it to the morgue, she said. The body should have been tagged for cremation, but apparently was not identified by any tag.

″Someone mistook it for laundry and tossed it into the laundry basket,″ she said.

A worker at the Angelica Health Care Plant in Rome found the body Thursday among laundry received overnight from the hospital, Floyd County Police Capt. Tommy Shiflett said.

Police turned the body over to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, but investigators Friday had not determined why the baby was stillborn, he said.
