Portage girl going for pop-tab record once more
The Woodridge Primary School first-grader who collected more than 10 million pop tabs in one year is hoping to officially break the world record in 2019.
Mercedes Alves of Portage is already on pace to exceed the current Guinness World Records total of nearly 3 million tabs after she and her family received an anonymous donation of 1 million tabs, her father, Joe Alves, said.
She started collecting tabs Sept. 1 and has until Aug. 31, 2019, to collect enough pop tabs for the record. Her tabs will once again be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Madison.
Mercedes was unable to get her name in the record book earlier this year when the family couldn’t find enough volunteers to count the tabs by hand. The family and Portage Police Department had estimated they would need more than 1,000 volunteers to accomplish the feat.
Mercedes is once again honoring her late brother, Gunner Sweeney. She is also collecting in honor of fallen veterans like Daniel Thompson — a 2003 Portage High School graduate and Wisconsin Army National Guard veteran who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Feb. 24, 2009.
