Trial pushed for ex-officers accused of beating Hispanic man

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The trial has been delayed for two men who were fired as New Orleans police officers after they allegedly beat a Hispanic man and called him a “fake American.”

Authorities say John Galman and Spencer Sutton, who are white, were off-duty when they attacked Jorge Gomez outside a bar in July.

Gomez was bruised and required stitches. Galman and Sutton are charged with simple battery.

A police report says Galman confronted Gomez, who grew up in the U.S. and was born in Honduras, claiming he was “stealing valor” by wearing a military camouflage-style outfit. Gomez’s lawyer says he served overseas in the Louisiana National Guard.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports the trial set for Thursday was pushed to Dec. 13 at the request of one of their lawyers.
