Beaumont early voter turnout spikes

May 1, 2019

Beaumont residents turned out on the last few days of early voting, bringing turnout totals closer to what city staff expected.

“It looks to me that the numbers have picked up tremendously on Saturday,” said City Clerk Tina Broussard. “With that being said, I think the numbers will increase (Tuesday) as well as on Election Day.”

Early voting totals show 10,521 of 70,976 registered voters turned out during early voting.

The city has 19 candidates for six contested races — at the higher end of what Broussard has seen during her time as city clerk.

Beaumont voters are also choosing school board members and a port commissioner.

Final early voting totals aren’t yet available in Port Arthur, but numbers through Monday showed 1,905 of 28,174 voters had cast their vote.

When Tuesday’s totals are added, the city likely will see above average early voting totals. Since 2015, the highest number of early voters turned out in 2016 with 2,317.

That was also the last time Port Arthur voters elected a Mayor — the only municipal office on this year’s ballot.

This report will be updated.
