Boys Tennis: Century impressive in Big Nine tournament

Century turned in a resounding effort in the Big Nine Conference boys tennis tournament Saturday at a variety of Rochester courts, winning individual titles at four out of seven spots.

That included at No. 1 singles where Varun Iyer downed Mayo’s Simon Kennel 6-1, 6-0 in the championship. Iyer is ranked No. 3 in Class AA.

Century’s Alec Sargent claimed the No. 2 singles title, beating Mayo’s Ojas Bhagra 6-4, 7-6 (7-5 tie-breaker) in the championship; Century’s Hunter Thamert won at No. 3 singles, beating Mayo’s Philip Wisniewski 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9-7 tie-breaker) for the title; and Century’s Josh Christensen and Arhan Mehta teamed to beat Mayo’s Avanish Misra and Nicholas Stan 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (9-7 tie-breaker) in the No. 1 doubles title match.

Mayo’s Alex Lopez and Rohan Patel won the No. 2 doubles crown, beating Century’s Sanjiv Ramana and Henry Kruse 6-3, 6-2 for the championship; and the Mayo No. 3 doubles combination of Spencer Busch and Joseph Vlahakis were champions. They beat Century’s Jared Nathan and Elijah Tan 6-2, 6-0 in the title match.

John Marshall’s Max Milbrandt lost in the No. 4 singles championship, 6-1, 6-2 to Owatonna’s Maclean Pilcher.
