Mercedes Gives Shevardnadze New Car
BONN, Germany (AP) _ Germany and Daimler-Benz are giving Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze a new car to replace an armored Mercedes limousine damaged in an assassination attempt.
Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel said Germany is indebted to Shevardnadze for supporting German unification in 1990 in his former role as Soviet foreign minister.
Shevardnadze’s old car _ also a gift from Germany and the carmaker _ was damaged by gunfire and blackened by flames when his motorcade was ambushed Monday night in the Georgian capital, Tbilsi. Shevardnadze was not hurt.
The new $350,000 car is en route to Tbilisi.
