Last of 5 defendants sentenced in fentanyl ring bust

June 9, 2017

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — The last of five Delaware men sentenced in connection with the seizure of more than a kilogram of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid more potent than heroin, has received an 8-year prison term.

A federal judge sentenced 38-year-old Daniel Haye on Wednesday.

The other defendants, all from the Newark, Delaware, area, received sentences ranging from two years to more than nine years.

The five men were charged in February 2016 after being caught at an industrial park with 48,800 bags of what authorities initially believed to be heroin.

The defendants include 29-year-old Abdul Haye, a four-time convicted felon.

Prosecutors say Haye conspired with his brothers and others in a large-scale operation that included a Dominican drug source, seven other individuals who helped repackage drugs, and several women used to transport drugs.
