Evangelicals await rulings on gay marriage

June 24, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the Evangelical Church Alliance says opponents of same-sex marriage are likely to be disappointed when the Supreme Court issues its long-awaited rulings.

The Rev. Rob Schenck (shank) says he expects DOMA — the Defense of Marriage Act — to be struck down. DOMA defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman under federal law and allows states to deny recognition to same-sex marriages performed in other states.

Schenck says he’s praying that the ruling on DOMA, and a separate ruling on the constitutionality of California’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, will allow the states to continue making their own definitions of marriage.

Schenck intends to be inside the court when the decisions are released, and plans to meet with reporters outside afterward.
