Man shot, pistol-whipped during robbery at Cleveland gas station, police say

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 28-year-old man was pistol-whipped and shot during an armed robbery at a gas station in the city’s Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 4 a.m. Monday at the Marathon gas station on East 89th Street and Buckeye Road.

Surveillance video from the shooting showed police the events that led up to the shooting, police reports say.

The 28-year-old man pulled into the parking lot in a 2000 BMW. Another car, a gold Mercury Montego, pulled into a parking space, police reports say.

The man and two men from the Mercury talked briefly before the Mercury pulled out of the lot, police reports say.

Two minutes later the Mercury returned to the parking lot and the shooter walked up to the 28-year-old man, police reports say.

The two men fought and the man with the gun tried to grab the man’s car keys, police reports say. The shooter pulled out his gun and pistol-whipped the man twice in the face, police reports say.

The 28-year-old man jumped in his car and the shooter fired three gunshots at the car, police reports say. Two bullets hit the 28-year-old man, once in his leg and once in the abdomen, police reports say.

The shooter ran to the Mercury and the car sped off, police reports say. Officers were unable to speak with the man because of the severity of his injury and because he was intoxicated, police reports say.

No arrests have been made in the case.
