North Augusta man sentenced for impregnating juvenile

August 8, 2018

A North Augusta man pleaded guilty Monday to committing sexual battery on a 12-year-old, who became pregnant and gave birth as a result.

Alexander Marcell Spann, 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, victim 11 to 14 years of age, according to court records.

Eleventh Judicial Circuit Judge William Keesley sentenced Spann to 10 years in prison, without the possibility of parole. When Spann is released from prison, he will be required to register as a sex offender.

Spann received no plea deal from the state.

Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputies met with the victim in 2017, and she told them the suspect has been molesting her since December 2015, according to the report.

The victim’s parents brought her to the hospital over concerns of her recent weight gain and found out she was pregnant, the report states.

The victim told investigators she was afraid to tell anyone because the suspect told her she would get in trouble if she did, according to the report.

After the victim gave birth to the child, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division performed a DNA analysis, confirming Spann was the father of the victim’s child, solicitors said.

Spann was arrested on Feb. 27, 2017 and taken to the Aiken County detention center, where he was held until he was released on Feb. 28, 2017, on a $20,000 bond, according to jail records.
