Romanian journalist who broadcast Comaneci’s perfect 10 dies
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Cristian Topescu, a Romanian sports broadcaster who won a place in the nation’s heart with his live commentary of gymnast Nadia Comaneci scoring a perfect 10 at the Olympics, has died. He was 81.
A spokesman for Bucharest’s Elias Hospital, Silvius Negoita, said Topescu died Tuesday of cardiac arrest.
Commenting on the 14-year-old Comaneci’s beam exercise at the 1976 Montreal Olympics before she was awarded a 10, Topescu said: “Her control of nerves and muscles are a true miracle.”
Comaneci praised him for his contribution to Romanian sport, saying she considered herself “his little child. We did Montreal together.”
Known for his love of sport and the human touches in his commentary, Topescu was elected to Parliament in 2008 for the Liberal Party, but later abandoned politics calling it “insincere.”
The Liberals called him “a beacon of fair play and patriotism.”
