Bradford ruled out...Von Miller voted top outside linebacker...Rutgers gets 2-year probation
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings say quarterback Sam Bradford won’t play against Tampa Bay because of his ailing left knee. Bradford wasn’t at practice today after taking part in a limited basis Wednesday and Thursday. Coach Mike Zimmer wouldn’t comment on an ESPN report that Bradford was traveling to seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedist who performed ligament reconstructions on Bradford’s knee in 2013 and 2014.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Browns rookie defensive end Myles Garrett might be close to making his NFL debut. The top overall pick in this year’s draft has missed Cleveland’s first two games because of a high right-ankle sprain. He’s listed as “doubtful” on the injury report, but coach Hue Jackson hasn’t ruled him out of Sunday’s game at Indianapolis.
DENVER (AP) — Denver’s Von Miller gets the top billing in The Associated Press rankings of the NFL’s best outside linebackers. Miller beat out Kansas City’s Justin Houston and Atlanta’s Vic Beasley by a wide margin in voting by Pro Football Hall of Fame member James Lofton and 10 AP football writers.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The NCAA has placed Rutgers on two-year probation and publically reprimanded and censured the university for failing to monitor its football program over a five-year period between 2011 and 2015. The Division I Committee on Infractions panel ruled today that Rutgers did not ensure its football student host group and its drug-testing program followed university policy and NCAA rules. The panel also said that former football coach Kyle Flood failed to monitor his operations staff and violated university policy by contacting an instructor to make a special academic arrangement for a student-athlete.
GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — The New York Knicks say they expect Carmelo Anthony will attend training camp when they report next week. Coach Jeff Hornacek (HORN’-uh-sehk) says Anthony will be in the starting lineup. The Knicks had been looking for ways to trade their All-Star forward under former president Phil Jackson, but they haven’t found any deal.
