Gun rights supporters rally in Wiscasset, Maine

March 10, 2013

WISCASSET, Maine (AP) — Gun rights advocates in Maine are protesting gun-control measures being introduced in the Legislature.

A rally Saturday in Wiscasset drew about 175 gun rights supporters. Many carried signs supporting gun rights, and others openly carried rifles and handguns

Jessica Beckwith, a Lewiston resident who heads the Maine Gun Rights Coalition, said she organized the rally in opposition to bills introduced in Augusta that she called “anti-gun.”

Former state Rep. Les Fossel told the crowd that the lawmaker who’s proposing the bills is not a “representative of the people.”

Jeremy Hiltz, pastor of the Windsor Memorial Baptist Church, told the Maine Sunday Telegram (http://bit.ly/16jfOkp ) the Second Amendment is a “right given to us by God.” He carried a semi-automatic rifle and a pistol, while his 7-year-old son carried a .22-caliber rifle.
