Benjamin (Benny) L. Thelen of Gilbert, Arizona, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 1, 2018.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019, at the Union Cemetery in Shelby. After the service there will be a celebration of Benny’s life at the Shelby Hotel.

Benny was born in Fordland, Missouri, to Hubert and Naomi (Clobes) Thelen on June 15, 1939. Benny grew up in Shelby, and graduated from Shelby High School in 1957. He entered the United States Navy in 1957. He returned to Shelby in 1960. On Oct. 21, 1961, he was united in marriage to Gaylene Shunk at Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Columbus. To that union were born three children, Lisa, Lori, and Nick.

Benny worked at Dale Electronics in Columbus, and moved to Loveland, Colorado in 1982, where he was a quality control manager for Woodward Governor, retiring in 2003.

Benny enjoyed golfing, fishing, horse racing, bowling, tossing horseshoes, and meeting many good friends along the way. He will be remembered by his infectious laugh and the love he had for his family.

Benny is survived by his wife Gaylene Thelen of Gilbert, Arizona; daughter Lisa Benson-Garza of Columbus, daughter Lori (Lara) Thelen of Hayward, California; son Nick (Tina) Thelen of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren Holden (Amy) Benson, Atlantis (Rogelio) Garza-Martinez, Taylor Thelen, Luke Thelen, Nayani Azibuke, Xochitl Lawrence-Thelen; great-grandchildren Peter Roe, Analise Martinez; brother Gerald (Carol) Thelen of Columbus, sister Deanna (Larry) Waller of Tucson, Arizona; brother George (Cindy) Thelen of Shelby, sister-in-law Norma Mayer of Grant, brother-in-law Tom (Julee) Shunk of Lincoln, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Hubert and Naomi Thelen, in-laws Lester Shunk, Miriam Wozny and Fritz Wozny, sister-in-law Marilyn Griffiths, brother-in-law Harry Griffiths, and brother-in-law Royston Mayer.
