Kelakos Community Spirit Award
DRACUT -- The Kiwanis Club of Greater Lowell will honor Robert Skirvin-Orr on Friday with the 2019 Thomas G. Kelakos Community Spirit Award at The Mill House at Lenzi’s Catering.
Skirvin-Orr, who owns a boutique servicing cancer patients at Lowell General Hospital’s main campus, has been involved in charitable work over the years and directs the annual CatWalk for CancerCare event. The CatWalk benefiting the hospital’s TeamWalk for CancerCare features models who are either cancer survivors or have a connection to someone with cancer.
The honor Skirvin-Orr will receive is named after the late Kelakos, who through his longtime membership of the Kiwanis Club helped out many organizations and local schools such as Lowell High School and the Hellenic American Academy. Kelakos died in 2000.
Skirvin-Orr, a Lowell native who recently moved to Nashua, N.H., said he felt a “little overwhelmed” at being selected as this year’s honoree.
“I just don’t do what I do for any accolades,” he said. “I just do it because I know the number of people that it can help, including some of our own family. My sister just passed from cancer and Lowell General Hospital’s TeamWalk was good to her.”
Bethany Loveless, a member of the Kiwanis Club, said Skirvin-Orr has been involved in multiple charities like the late Kelakos was.
“He’s on the board of Megan’s House, he supports Catie’s Closet, he supports the Merrimack Valley Food Bank,” Loveless said.
Janet Leggat, a Kiwanis Club member who sits on the award committee, said the organization looks for someone who contributes to the community in a quiet way. She said she’s seen how much the CatWalk has grown under Skirvin-Orr’s direction, adding that he “brings it alive.”
“He’s doing all kinds of things and, again, not somebody that a lot of people would recognize the name but he touches a lot of lives,” she said. “For me, that was what made me think this was a wonderful recipient for this award.”
Tickets cost $75 per person and can be purchased at LowellKiwanis.org . Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7:30 p.m. Lenzi’s is located at 810 Merrimack Ave., Dracut.
