Schalk Burger to rejoin Springboks squad
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Schalk Burger will rejoin South Africa’s squad for its final two games of the Rugby Championship after injuries to flankers Francois Louw and Willem Alberts.
The South African Rugby Union said on Wednesday that the 2007 World Cup-winning loose forward will be available for the home matches against Australia and New Zealand after completing his commitments to his Japanese club at the end of this week.
South Africa plays Australia in Cape Town on Sept. 27 and world champion New Zealand in Johannesburg on Oct. 4.
The 31-year-old Burger has 71 caps for the Springboks, and returned this season from a three-year international absence because of injury and illness. Last year, he contracted bacterial meningitis during surgery for an injury, leaving his career in doubt.
