DAVY, W.Va. (AP) _ A portion of the roof of a McDowell County coal mine collapsed Monday, killing one miner and injuring three others, authorities said.

One of the injured miners was trapped in the Asco Co. Lobo No. 2 mine near Davy for about 4 1/2 hours before rescuers reached him.

Other crews reached the body of Marvin Walker, 56, of Twin Branch about the same time, said Deputy Energy Commissioner Bart Lay. Walker died after being trapped about 2,500 feet inside the mine, Lay said.

A 22-foot section of the 8-foot-thick roof collapsed about 6 p.m., according to Lay. The cause of the collapse was not known late Monday.

One of the injured men was admitted to a hospital for observation and one was listed in stable condition. The condition of the miner trapped 4 1/2 hours was not immediately available.
