Dog, Cat Perish In Luzerne House Fire

March 11, 2019

LUZERNE — A man escaped unharmed from a house fire in the borough on Sunday, but two pets perished.

Firefighters responded to a reported fire at 572 Miller St. shortly after noon Sunday, according to Luzerne Fire Chief Ron Rahl.

A resident of the home got out unscathed and the fire was under control in about 20 minutes, Rahl said. However, a dog and a cat dog did not survive, despite efforts to resuscitate the dog, the chief said.

The man who escaped the home is staying with a relative, while another resident was away at the time of the fire, according to Rahl. The cause of the fire is under investigation but it does not appear to be suspicious, Rahl said. It appears the fire started in a pantry area in the rear of the home, he said.

The Kingston, Pringle, Swoyersville and Hanover Twp. fire departments assisted.
