HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — A brother and sister from Haverhill face charges for allegedly allowing their disabled 65-year-old brother to live in what police described as "horrifying" conditions.

The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1Sg52We ) reports that police say Leonard Cataldo was found last weekend in the apartment the siblings share on the floor next to his bed, emaciated, dehydrated, covered in his own feces and urine, and crawling with insects. He was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Sixty-seven-year-old Mark Cataldo and 58-year-old Alexandra Cataldo were held without bail at their arraignment on elder neglect charges Tuesday pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for next week.

Defense lawyers say the siblings tried to get help for their brother, but he always adamantly refused their offers. They sought bail, saying their clients posed no societal threat.
