Philbin, Gifford at Mount Rushmore
MOUNT RUSHMORE, S.D. (AP) _ Lincoln. Jefferson. Washington. Roosevelt. And, of course, Regis.
TV morning hosts Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford showed up beside the stone-faced presidential profiles at Mount Rushmore during a marathon broadcast of ``Live with Regis and Kathie Lee″ on Monday.
About 3,000 people began arriving at an outdoor amphitheater about 1 a.m., although the live broadcast didn’t start until 7 a.m. MDT. A second show, which was to be broadcast today, was videotaped after the first program.
Gifford, who wore a traditional American Indian buckskin dress and leather moccasins, took a helicopter tour of the Black Hills on Sunday.
Philbin, on the other hand, scrambled to the top of Mount Rushmore’s carved granite faces as part of a personal tour of the site.
``That’s the story of our life,″ Philbin said. ``I climbed, and she flew up in a helicopter with a cup of tea.″
Gov. Bill Janklow presented a proclamation to the talk-show duo and later jumped up from his front-row seat to hug a guest on the show _ fitness guru Richard Simmons.
Simmons said he liked the state, its people and their hospitality.
``I felt like I was on the set of `The Waltons,‴ he said.
