Joe Manchin undecided on Barr vote for attorney general

February 11, 2019

Sen. Joe Manchin, West Virginia Democrat, has not yet decided whether he will vote to confirm attorney general nominee William P. Barr, his spokesman told The Washington Times Monday.

One of the most conservative Democrats in the Senate, Mr. Manchin is seen as someone who could cross the aisle to support President Trump’s pick for attorney general.

The Senate is expected to take up Mr. Barr’s nomination later this week. He is expected to be confirmed easily because of Republican’s majority in the Senate.

A handful of top Democrats, including California Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein, have said they will oppose his nomination.

So far, Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama is the only Democrat who has publicly stated that he would vote for Mr. Barr.

Jonathan Kott, Mr. Manchin’s spokesman, did not say if the senator would reveal his decision prior to the vote.
