Rochester Kmart to close in March
Rochester’s long-time Kmart is on the latest list of stores to close from the bankrupt Sears Corp.
A list released today shows Rochester’s store at 201 Ninth St. SE is slated to close in late March 2019. Liquidation sales are expected to being within two weeks.
The only other Minnesota store on the list is Sears in Bloomington.
Sears/Kmart has struggled in recent years, like many other retailers. It filed for bankruptcy in October.
In May 2017, Kmart closed its popular pharmacy in the Rochester store.
Rochester’s south Kmart has long been a mainstay of the area and it has survived events ranging from floods to widespread store closings over the years. It even has outlived a much young sibling store.
In 1981, Kmart built a second Rochester store at 37th Street and West River Road. By 1985, it closed its doors. However, Kmart was still on the hook for a lease through 2003. In 1992, Goodwill took 19,000- square-feet, but the rest stood empty until IBM took over the rest in 1997.
