Gardner Can’t Hang On

The Gardner High football team jumped out to a 6-0 lead over visiting Murdock on Saturday, but couldn’t hold on, falling 8-6 at Stone Field.

High schools

The loss drops the Wildcats to 0-4. Miles Brissett found the end zone in defeat.

Richie Swanson intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown with two minutes left in the third to pull Murdock (3-1) even. Swanson added the 2-point conversion to put the Blue Devils ahead for good.

In other local football action Saturday, Monty Tech fell to Bay Path Regional, 18-16.

North Middlesex took on Fitchburg in a late game at Nashoba Tech. See Monday’s S&E for details.

The Blue Knights (4-3-1) were led by Leah Sowerbutts, who potted 3 goals. Emily Grady and Daphne Sroka also scored in the victory.

Kaitlyn Boissoneau scored the lone goal for the Bernardians.

Boys’ soccer

Shrewsbury 2

John Liddy and Yuriel Alfero scored for the Blue Devils (2-0-4) in their draw with Shrewsbury in a Midland-Wachusett League matchup.

Girls’ soccer

Nashoba 2

Holy Name 1

Natasha Ramos and Bella MacNeil scored for the Chieftains (4-1-1) as they outlasted Holy Name.

Groton-Dunstable 1

North Middlesex 0

Abby Eisenklam notched the only goal of the contest to lead the Crusaders to the tight victory.

In other local girls soccer action Saturday, Leominster High fell to Shepherd Hill, 4-0.
