Lowell Man Facing Several Charges After Foot Chase

December 2, 2018

LOWELL -- A Lowell man was allegedly caught in possession of items stolen from cars following a foot pursuit with police in the Acre neighborhood early Sunday morning.

Luis Gonzalez-Ortega, 30, was arrested on a default warrant, possession of a Class E substance and a city ordinance violation for possession of a knife, according to a press release from the Lowell Police Department.

Additional charges are pending, the release states.

Police received a call around 4:45 a.m. about a suspicious man looking into vehicles in the area of Fletcher Street. Responding officers saw the man fitting the description, carrying a backpack near the intersection of Fletcher and Franklin streets.

The suspect, later identified as Gonzalez-Ortega, allegedly dropped the backpack and jacket and ran when he saw police.

He was apprehended a short time later and found in possession of items “consistent with thefts from vehicles,” the release states.

The Criminal Investigation Division is conducting a follow-up investigation.
