No. 8 Highlands will face WTAMU in opening round of NCAA Division II Tournament
Amarillo by morning, Amarillo on my mind.
The New Mexico Highlands men’s basketball team learned its postseason destination for the NCAA Division II Tournament, which starts later this week. The 64-team field was announced late Sunday night.
The Cowboys (22-9) will head to the Texas panhandle to take part in the South Central Regional hosted by West Texas A&M in Amarillo. They will be the No. 8 seed and face WTAMU (31-3) in the opening round on Saturday night. A win would mean a second-round game the following day against either Texas A&M-Commerce (23-8) or Dallas Baptist (23-9), also in Amarillo.
Highlands earned an automatic NCAA berth by winning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday night in Golden, Colo., the first postseason conference championship in school history. The Cowboys are making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2010.
Should NMHU win the eight-team South Central Regional, it would advance to the Elite Eight in Evansville, Ind., from March 27-30. NMHU head coach Craig Snow was a star guard at Evansville during his playing days and the Cowboys opened this season on the road against his alma mater back on Nov. 3.
