Three Bombs Explode In Athens; Terrorist Group Claims Responsibility

February 23, 1989

ATHENS, Greece (AP) _ Three bombs damaged two apartments and a house in the capital, and a leftist group today claimed responsibility.

The dwellings were empty when the explosions occurred late Wednesday and early today, and police said no injuries were reported.

A police spokesman said the house belonged to a Greek diplomat and the apartments to a taxi driver and a businessman.

″None of the apartments belonged to any important people, that is, people that could be considered likely targets of a terrorist attack,″ said the spokesman, who requested anonymity in accordance with Greek practice.

The leftist November 17 group took responsibility for the explosions in a proclamation sent to the afternoon daily Ethnos. The group said it blew up the empty homes to protest the lack of affordable housing in the metropolis.

The group is named after the day in 1973 when troops crushed a student uprising against the 1967-74 military dictatorship.

It has claimed 13 killings since it first surfaced with the 1975 assassination of Richard Welch, the CIA station chief in Greece. They have also claimed the killing of two other U.S. officials.

None of its members has ever been arrested.
