PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (AP) _ The U.N.’s top official in Kosovo has resigned to spend more time with his family, an official said Friday.
There was no United Nations’ confirmation of the resignation of Hans Haekkerup, the province’s chief administrator. The Kosovo official spoke on condition of anonymity.
Haekkerup, 56, has had an extensive political and public service career. He was first elected to the Danish Parliament in 1979 and served as minister of defense from January 1993 until beginning his term in Kosovo this January. He previously served in the ministries of education, social affairs and labor.
Haekkerup was appointed to replace former French Health Minister Bernard Kouchner just over a year ago by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
