SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Firefighter Michael Tapia was among the first to respond to an emergency call he heard over the radio dispatch _ his 16-month-old daughter had fallen into the family swimming pool.

The baby, Alexandria, died Thursday despite her parents' and paramedics' attempts to save her.

``Tell every parent in San Jose to go home tonight and kiss their babies,'' said the weeping mother, Bridget Tapia.

Tapia, who has had paramedic training, rushed home to find his wife doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, fire Capt. Rob Piper said.

The parents tried to revive their baby until paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead about 30 minutes later, Piper said.

The home is less than a mile from Tapia's station.
