Edmonton Oilers Sign Riesen

July 15, 1998

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) _ Michel Riesen, the first Swiss-born player selected in the first round of the NHL draft, signed a multiyear deal with the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old right wing, drafted 14th overall in 1997, spent last season with HC Davos of the Swiss National League. He had 16 goals and nine assists in 32 games, and five goals and five assists in 18 playoff games.

``Riesen is a pure goal scorer,″ said Kevin Prendergast, Edmonton’s director of player personnel. ``He has a great accurate shot and when you combine it with his speed and skating ability, he has the tools to be a serious offensive threat.″
