Niners Acquire Packers’ Newsome
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Cornerback Craig Newsome, a four-year starter in Green Bay before his demotion this week, was traded today to the San Francisco 49ers for an undisclosed draft pick.
Newsome is expected to join the 49ers in time for practice Wednesday as San Francisco prepares for Sunday’s opener at Jacksonville.
The acquisition of the 6-foot Newsome gives the 49ers a bigger presence in the secondary. San Francisco had concerns facing some of the league’s taller, physical receivers with its three top cornerbacks all 5-9 or under.
Newsome had 178 tackles and four interceptions in four seasons in Green Bay. He’s remembered in San Francisco as the player who returned fullback Adam Walker’s first-play fumble for a touchdown in a 1996 playoff game.
Newsome, who earns $800,000, became expendable in Green Bay when rookies Antuan Edwards and Mike McKenzie played well in the preseason and moved ahead of him in the Packers’ lineup.
