Hot Property New Canaan antique colonial builds upon its rustic charm

December 4, 2018

Vintage charm and character make this 1870 antique colonial on Oenoke Ridge in the heart of New Canaan the ultimate country retreat.

The owners of this five-bedroom home made several additions in 2001, including a one-of-a-king detached barn/garage on the 2.93-acre property.

“This home has a commanding yet private presence on prestigious Oenoke Ridge. It’s a home to love and cherish forever,” listing agent Mary Higgins of Halstead Connecticut said.

The home, which has 6,222 square feet plus an additional 750 finished square feet in the lower level, features three levels and a walk-up unfinished attic.

The lower level offers a media/home theater room with a surround sound system, a mirrored exercise room and a temperature-controlled wine cellar that can fit 600 bottles. It also has a mechanical room with lots of storage.

Immediately to the left of the front door is a wood-paneled library with a wood-burning fireplace and built-ins. The front entry hall, Higgins said, has the original 1870 staircase with original bannisters, spindles and a newel post.

The original living room also has a wood-burning fireplace, one of four fireplaces in the home. The living room has a bay window and an original door to the covered front porch. There is also a butler’s pantry on this level that has a sink and built-in cabinetry.

“Then go into the smashing, new eat-in gourmet kitchen,” Higgins said.

Highlights in the kitchen include an AGA four-oven cooker, an English cast-iron range and Viking four-burner cooktop wall ovens. There is also a SubZero refrigerator/freezer and an island with Carrara marble. There’s also a walk-in pantry and hidden silver flatware storage cabinets and built-in stereo system.

“There are also stunning views of the property with the abundance of windows in the kitchen,” Higgins said. The kitchen can seat eight comfortably.

The family room, she said, has a wood-burning fireplace, built-in cabinets and bookshelves. It also has a flat-screen disappearing television lift box built into a windows seat.

“The TV can disappear. It’s really quite incredible,” Higgins said.

The main level also has a laundry room with custom built-in cabinets, granite countertops and a clothes chute. This level also has two formal powder rooms and mudroom with custom built-in cabinets and window seats with storage.

The second level features four bedrooms, including the exquisite master suite with tray ceiling. There is also a king-size bed with headboard. The master bath has double vanities with custom cabinets and Carrara marble surfaces and a steamed shower with nickel-plated fixtures.

The highlight of the barn, Higgins said, is the great room/office.

“It’s perfect for an at-home office or party space,” Higgins said. “In it, there is a wood-burning cast-iron Waterford stove and custom built-in shelves and closets.” You can access the barn and three-car garage through a covered breezeway through a mudroom side door.

The property, Higgins said, has been professionally landscaped and has a heated Gunite pool with a separate spa.
