Irv Cross Becomes Athletic Director At ISU
POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) _ Irv Cross, who had a long career in the National Football League before appearing on ``The NFL Today″ for 17 years on CBS, on Friday was named athletic director at Idaho State University.
``He’s a man of great substance and skill,″ said Kent Tingey, director of university relations. ``We’re very, very pleased to have Mr. Cross. He has the skills necessary to take athletics to the level we want it to be.″
Kelley Wiltbank, who had served both as general counsel and athletic director, is surrendering the latter job.
The school said Cross will start sometime before July, but plans periodic visits to campus until then.
Cross was not immediately available for comment.
Cross, a former defensive back, played in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams before working as an assistant coach.
He is with the public finance division of Smith Barney at Leesburg, Va., and is a member of the NFL Foundation Board. He has served as a consultant to the Canadian Football League, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Running and Fitness Association.
ISU President Richard Bowen went to Virginia to conclude negotiations with Cross, Tingey said. Cross’ salary hasn’t been set, but will be in the $80,000 range.
The university’s athletic program has been under criticism for months after nine football or men’s basketball players were arrested for a variety of misdemeanors. Bowen has said publicly he won’t put up with it.
