Westford Academy Closes the Gap, but Falls to Hillies

September 22, 2018

HAVERHILL -- Westford Academy scored twice in the last four minutes of the game but that wasn’t enough to overcome the Haverhill lead as Westford fell 28-21 to slip to 1-2 on the season.

Haverhill 28, WA 21

Late in the game, the Grey Ghosts executed a perfect onside kick, recovering it on their own 47. Quarterback Cam Barisano, on a third-and-10, recovered his own fumble, scrambled, and threw a perfect bomb to Scott Beattie for a touchdown with just 57 seconds left on the clock. Christopher Kennedy’s kick was good and Westford was within a score at 28-21.

However, WA was not able to regain the ball and the game ended with a Hillie win for the home crowd.

Haverhill scored in every quarter led by senior David Carreiro, who ran it in twice in the win.

Haverhill scored on their first possession on a 52-yard drive capped by a Carreiro 5-yard run. The point after by Sergio Martinez put the home squad up 7-0 early.

Haverhill’s second score was highlighted by a 44-yard pass bringing them from their own 34 to the Gray Ghost 22. Quarterback Brady Skafas hit teammate Samuel Prescott from 25 yards out with slick pass to the near pylon. A missed kick put the Hillies up 13-0.

As the second quarter winded down, Westford’s Ben Antes set his team up with an 18-yard run to the visitors’ 1-yard line. After a couple of failed attempts, coach Pat Gendron went back to Antes, who found a seam and put Westford on the board. The Kennedy kick was good and the Ghosts were down 13-7.

Haverhill responded on its first possession of the second half with a drive beginning at its own 29. Carreiro notched his second score, taking it in from the 11. A two-point conversion run by quarterback Skafas had Haverhill up by two full scores (21-7).

Haverhill extended its lead to 28-7 at 5:24 of the final quarter on a 1-yard run by junior Disani Houston. On the ensuing kick-off, Westford’s Antes took the kick to the 38 of Haverhill. A solid Ghost series brought them to the 2-yard line, where Tyler Bella scored and Westford was down 28-14.
