Seton Hall 82, Providence 80

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ John Morton scored 21 points, including a pair of free throws with three seconds left, as Seton Hall rallied from a 20-point, first-half deficit to defeat Providence 82-80 in a Big East Conference game Tuesday night.

Mark Bryant preserved the victory for Seton Hall, 13-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference, when he rejected a layup by Chris Watts at the buzzer.

Seton Hall trailed 39-19 late in the first half but rallied to score 12 of the final 14 points to close the gap to 41-31 at halftime.

Morton and Nick Katsikis, who had 20 points, combined to score the Pirates’ first 25 points of the second half.

Seton Hall trailed 49-36 early in the period before Morton and Katsikis helped the Pirates tie the game at 62-62. They went ahead 65-62 on a 3-point basket by Katsikis, who hit four of his five 3-pointers in the second half.

Providence, 8-6 and 2-2, went ahead again 74-71 with about four minutes remaining on baskets by Quinton Burton and Eric Murdock. But Katsikis hit another 3-pointer to tie the game.

Bryant, who scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half, hit two shots to give Seton Hall an 80-78 lead with 1:10 to play.

Steve Wright of Providence tied the game for the last time with 50 seconds left, setting the stage for Morton’s game-winning free throws.

Burton led Providence with 17 points and Wright and Delray Brooks added 16 apiece.
