NEW YORK (AP) _ World Cup 1994 signed its third major official sponsor this weekend when MasterCard International announced its involvement with the soccer championship.

″The marriage of MasterCard, its 29,000 member banks and the World Cup is ideal to building awareness of the brand worldwide,″ said Alex W. Hart, Mastercard president and chief executive officer.

In 1990, at the World Cup in Italy, the MasterCard Award was given to one player from each game who contributed the most outstanding or memorable play. With that award, a donation was made to the players’ chosen charities, with approximately $60,000 distributed to those causes.

That award will be given at the 1994 tournament, the first to be held in the United States.

Previously, US Sprint and American Airlines had been signed as sponsors for the tournament, to be held June 17-July 17, 1994

TOKYO (AP) - Vladimir Jugovic scored two goals and Darko Panchev added a goal as Red Star Belgrade of Yugoslavia beat Coco Colo of Chile 3-0 for the Intercontinental Cup, soccer’s world club championship.

Jugovic scored 19 minutes into the first half of Sunday’s game and 13 minutes into the second half for Red Star, which won the title for the first time. Panchev scored with 18 minutes remaining before a sellout crowd of 60,000 at National Stadium.

Red Star, which beat Olympique Marseille of France 5-3 on penalty kicks after a scoreless tie in the European Champions Cup final in May, played the second half a man short after Dejan Savicevic, its captain, was ejected for punching Colo Colo defender Miguel Ramirez. Ramirez was given a yellow card for his part in the incident.

Two other Red Star players - midfielder Sinisa Mihajlovic and defender Goran Vasilijevic - were given yellow cards for rough play in the first three minutes of the second half.
