Heard on the Street: Med City soccer shop to close

November 13, 2018

Almost 10 years of selling soccer gear in Rochester will soon come to an end with the family-owned The Soccer Advantage closing its doors.

Owner Dean Alcock recently announced the impending closing of the store at 1115 Civic Center Drive NW, in the Barlow Plaza.

“After nearly 10 years, it is with mixed emotions that we announce we are closing the doors of The Soccer Advantage for good. We have loved serving the soccer community in Southeast Minnesota and beyond,” he posted on the store’s Facebook’s page on Friday.

While he did not give a specific closing date, Alcock added, “The good news is that you have a couple weeks to stock up on soccer gear or Christmas presents — all for a great deal. We will have significant sales to clear our inventory.”

Alcock, a local soccer coach, started the business as a small counter inside the Soccer World indoor dome in Southeast Rochester. That counter expanded to a small room and then to a larger space in Soccer World.

In 2010, the business moved into a 1,800-square-foot space at Suite 102 in 3160 Wellner Drive NE. That was the former Curves fitness center spot, next to Jenpachi Japanese Steak House.

The store, called the largest soccer shop in southeastern Minnesota, made another move in 2014. The Soccer Advantage moved to a 2,500-square-foot storefront in Barlow Plaza that opened up when Once Upon A Child moved to a new spot.
