Two Young Brothers Found Dead in Freezer

March 22, 1988

MURFREESBORO, Ark. (AP) _ Two young brothers died after being trapped in an abandoned freezer near their parents’ home, authorities said.

The boys’ stepfather, Larry O’Neal, found the bodies early Monday in the freezer, which was about 100 yards from the home and had been used as a worm bed, authorities said.

Curtis O’Neal, 8, and his 5-year-old brother, Billy Joe, died late Sunday or early Monday, said Pike County Coroner Dub Deal.

Deal said the parents had last seen them flying a kite about 5 p.m. Sunday. When the boys didn’t return home, the parents believed they were spending the night with their grandparents, who live nearby, he said.

The boys’ mother, Teresa O’Neal, discovered early Monday that they were missing, the coroner said.

Shirley Davis, the boys’ grandmother, told authorities they may have gotten muddy while playing in a creek and crawled into the freezer to change clothes.
